what is sip

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). It is a signaling protocol, widely used for creating and disabling multimedia communication sessions for voice and/or video calls across the Internet.

SIP operates independently of the underlying network hardware and is not concerned about the media in use. It simply defines how the customers end user (client) deviced can create, change and end connections, irrespective of whether the content is:

  • video conferencing,
  • streaming multimedia distribution,
  • instant messaging
  • web based or
  • gaming online

The SIP protocol has been accepted since November 2000, as a 3GPP signaling protocol and part of the architecture for delivering IP based streaming multimedia services to mobile phones.
